This group of categories recognises the movers and shakers in the built environment. Individuals must be based in the Middle East and achievements highlighted should be within the 12 month period leading up to the BPME Awards.

Individual Awards

Big Project’s Young Professional of the Year

Fresh talent is crucial to the future of the built environment and this category recognises, and encourages, excellence from young professionals. Accessible to men and women working in companies including developers, contractors, operators, specialists and suppliers, individuals must only meet the following criteria to qualify: the individual must be under 30 years old, and have held their current position for a period of at least six months.

Individuals are requested to submit proof of age via recognised ID and should use their nomination to highlight: why they deserve to win; sterling work performance; a willingness to learn and inspire others, and relevant supplementary activities tied to the built environment. Nominations can be significantly strengthened with the inclusion of signed/stamped positive testimonials from direct line managers and/or clients that endorse the individual’s professional achievements in the 12 months leading up to the awards. Testimonials older than 12 months will not be considered.

Individual Awards

Big Project’s Mentor of the Year

The transmission of knowledge is crucial in the built environment, and mentors can provide important advice, guidance and support to their mentees, helping the latter to develop important skills and abilities. Simultaneously, mentors can expand their own professional knowledge, skills and abilities through the instruction and facilitation of mentees. This category seeks to recognise the work of individuals who nurture others on their own volition or via sanctioned programmes.

Nominations are welcome from men and women working at developers, contractors, operators, specialists and suppliers. To submit a strong nomination, individuals should: why they deserve to win this award; highlight whether they are mentoring colleagues independently or via company programmes and their motivation for doing this (personal interest/KPI as a manger etc), and outline goals and achievements, whether it is through one-to-one interactions or through group sessions in the 12 months leading up to the awards. Testimonials from mentees that highlight the impact the mentor has had on their professional development will add significant weight to a nomination.

Individual Awards

Big Project’s Woman of the Year

Diversity is still a challenge in the built environment and this category aims to shine a spotlight on women who have made their mark on the built environment and are continuing their professional journeys.

Open to women working at developers, contractors, operators, specialists and suppliers, individuals must meet the following criteria to qualify: they must have at least three years of experience in the construction sector and not hold an executive or C-suite role. Women in executive or C-suite positions should nominate in the ‘Executive of the Year’ category.

To stand the best chance of gaining recognition from the panel of judges, nominees should highlight (in the 12 months leading up to the awards): why they deserve to win; the sterling work they’ve done (including project work); showcase collaborative efforts with their peers; demonstrate how they are personally and professionally pushing for greater diversity within their organisation, and highlight their engagement with the broader built environment through activities such as speaking engagements. Positive testimonials from line managers, clients and colleagues highlighting why the individual deserves to win the award are recommended.

Big Project’s Team of the Year

Construction works carried out across the built environment are complex and achieving goals calls for a team that’s acting in unison, and performing like a well-oiled machine, day-after-day. This category was conceptualised to recognise the tireless efforts of teams across the built environment, whether they are delivering an entire project; a particular aspect of a project, or are operating the project, post-handover.

Teams from development firms, contractors, operators, specialists and suppliers are encouraged to nominate and explain (in the 12 months leading up to the awards): why they deserve to win; what they did as a team on a particular project to achieve a defined goal (during construction or post construction); how they collaborated with each other and other stakeholders; the performance the team achieved as a whole and the benefits to the asset owner, and outline any commendations the team has received. Signed or stamped testimonials can add significant weight to a nomination, as long as they are less than 12 months old.

Big Project’s Executive of the Year

Executives sit at the top of the pyramid within an organisation and are responsible for overseeing everything from a firm’s general direction to finances and operations. Men and women with at least three years of service within their respective organisations as part of the C-Suite qualify to participate in this category.

A strong nomination will highlight the executive’s exemplary performance in the 12 months leading up to the Big Project ME awards and why they deserve to win. Nominations should demonstrate how the executive: drove business success; spearheaded new initiatives; ensured existing mandates are followed and achieved; showcased a commitment to building a diverse and sustainability-focused organisation, and influenced the broader industry on a particular critical issue. Signed or stamped testimonials from peers that are less than 12 months old will significantly strengthen a nomination.

Sustainability Awards

Sustainability in the built environment has gone from being an optional extra to mandatory and the categories here seek to highlight and recognise sustainability-focused excellence. Organisations from across the Middle East are welcome to participate and should look to highlight their performance in the 12 months leading up to the Big Project ME Awards.

Sustainability Awards

Supply Chain Sustainability Initiative of the Year

Regardless of the scope of a project, a robust supply chain is critical to its successful delivery. As pressure mounts on the built environment to become more sustainable as standard practice, the time is now for key construction stakeholders to influence supply chains, so that they fully integrate ethical, legal and environmentally responsible practices into a competitive, successful and reliable model. This category was conceptualised to celebrate a supply chain initiative or mandate that has been rolled out by a developer, contractor or supplier that puts sustainability in sharp focus.

A strong nomination will include an outline of the initiative and why it deserves to win and will highlight actual progress/achievements in the 12 months leading up to the awards including: supply chain focused Net Zero goals; optimising supply chain routes to minimise the environmental impact of transportation; reducing waste through demand planning; the use of sustainable materials, and training to ensure a skill gap is not standing in the way of achieving Net Zero. Testimonials that are less than 12 months old will strengthen the overall nomination.

Sustainability Awards

Sustainable Developer of the Year

Developers sit at the upper echelons of the built environment and are responsible for driving the development of real estate. With the UAE declaring 2023 the ‘Year of Sustainability’ and with Dubai hosting the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), there has never been more focus on achieving Net Zero and sustainable development. This category seeks to highlight developers who have integrated sustainable principles into their day-to-day operations and mandated that their projects be delivered and operated sustainably.

Developers of any size are encouraged to nominate for this category and, to submit a strong nomination, they should: why they deserve to win; outline their sustainable mandate and Net Zero goals; commitment to in-country value; showcase tangible progress of achieving Net Zero goals with evidence; outline how they are influencing their supply chain to procure the project sustainably, and highlight their efforts to reduce GHG emissions (original mandate with progress made where possible) in the operation of finished projects. Testimonials that serves as evidence of Net Zero commitment in the development and operation of a project will constitute a strong nomination (these must be less than 12 months old).

Sustainable Contractor of the Year

Contractors are responsible for taking a project from vision to reality by deploying expertise and best practices to get the job done on time and budget, whilst adhering to relevant codes and standards. As the built environment steps up its focus on sustainable development and achieving Net Zero to prevent catastrophic climate change, this category recognises companies that have incorporated sustainable practices across their business and on job sites.

Open to contractors of any size and specialisation across the Middle East, nominations should clearly highlight why the contractor deserves to win, and the contractor’s commitment to sustainability on a day-to-day basis within the office, and on job sites. Nominations must include real world evidence of sustainable practices and project delivery, the use of sustainable materials, positive influence on the supply chain and the positive impact it has had on the project. Recent testimonials (less than 12 months old) that highlight the success of sustainable initiatives and practices will add significant weight to a nomination.

Sustainable Project of the Year

Conceptualised to highlight recent projects that best embody sustainable principles and practices in the construction or post-construction phase, this category welcomes nominations from developers, contractors and operators.

Projects that have been completed and are operational in the 12 months leading up to the awards will be considered for this award (projects that are under construction will not be considered).

A strong nomination will highlight why the project deserves to win, the project’s Net Zero goal or mandate and achievements including: the use of environmentally friendly building methodologies; the use of sustainable materials; the use of locally sourced sustainable materials to reduce logistics-related GHG emissions; the use of cutting edge technology to efficiently design and deliver or operate the structure, and the achievements of green building ratings (local and international). A nomination can significantly be strengthened with positive testimonials and by providing factual benchmark data highlighting savings achieved through sustainable initiatives.

Developers sit at the upper echelons of the built environment and are responsible for driving the development of real estate in a city. Companies investing in the development of residential, commercial, hospitality, or retail projects in the Middle East, with development values up to US $30 million qualify for this category. Developments can be either standalone structures or small developments; developers with project investment values greater than $30 million should nominate in the ‘Mid-sized Developer of the Year’ category.

To standout, nominations must highlight: why the developer deserves to win; the developer’s commitment to launching and delivering standout projects that enrich the market they are in; project quality and sustainability; the in-country value they bring to the market they operate in, as well as their commitment to: diversity and inclusion; staff wellness, and labour welfare.

Skills Development Programme of the Year

Nurturing skills and passing them on to future generations is critical in the built environment. This category therefore seeks to highlight and recognise companies that invest in staff, and encourage them to further develop their personnel skills or undertake career advancement programmes.

Contractors across the Middle East can submit nominations to this category and use their nominations to highlight: why they deserve to win; the name/focus of their skills development programme; the targets the programme has and successes achieved in the 12 months leading up to the awards, and how the company actively encourages its staff to embark on personal or career advancement journeys. Nominations can be greatly strengthened by providing testimonials sourced from staff who have directly benefited from the programme in question.

Fit-Out Contractor of the Year

Fit-out contractors take empty canvases and transform them into usable spaces or can reinvigorate out-of-date spaces that no longer suit the owner or operator’s requirements via refurbishment. This category is dedicated to recognising the region’s most professional, efficient and respected fit-out contractors, whether they are a standalone firm or one that is part of a larger group.

This section of the BPME Awards focuses on everything from 3D printed projects to refurbishments, fit-out, massive residential masterplans and much more.

3D Printed Project of the Year

3D printing technology has emerged as a suitable method of on-site project delivery and, as the technology evolves, contractors are using 3D printers to deliver a broader range of projects. Several have already been delivered across the Middle East, and this category looks to recognise standout projects that have been delivered using 3D printing.

Ahead of submitting nominations, all the necessary approvals must be sourced from the relevant parties by the organisation submitting the nomination.

Nominations can be submitted by developers, contractors, specialists, and 3D printing suppliers (printer manufacturers etc), and should include: why the project deserves to win; the overall scope and key details of the project (length of time to print the structure, labour onsite etc); why 3D printing was chosen over traditional delivery methods and the benefits realised (including sustainable achievements); the 3D printer and material used and how both were adjusted to account for regional climate and project nuances, and the challenges that were encountered and overcome in the delivery of the project. Due to how 3D printed projects are delivered, only nominations highlighting finished projects in the 12 month leading up to the awards will be considered. Nominations can be significantly strengthened with positive signed/stamped testimonials from the project owner or operator.

Offsite Construction Project of the Year

Offsite construction has emerged as a viable alternative to traditional construction. Thanks to its numerous benefits, several projects across the Middle East have been delivered using this delivery methodology. This category looks to recognise standout projects that have been delivered partially or fully using offsite construction – there are no restrictions with regards to the type of projects that can be submitted (residential, hospitality etc are all welcome).

Ahead of submitting nominations, all the necessary approvals must be sourced from the relevant parties by the organisation submitting the nomination.

Nominations can be submitted by developers, contractors, offsite manufacturing specialists and suppliers, and should include: why the project deserves to win; the overall scope and key details of the project; why offsite construction was chosen over traditional delivery methods and the benefits realised (including sustainable achievements), and the challenges that were encountered and overcome in the delivery of the project. Only projects that have been completed or are at least 50% complete in the 12 month period leading up to the awards are eligible to win. Fit-Out Project of the Year

The fit-out of any space calls for an eye for detail and collaboration, and this category aims to highlight standout fit-out projects from across the Middle East. Projects submitted to this category must be new build but beyond this, there are no restrictions with regards to the type of projects that can be submitted (projects can be within structures or out in the open and can be residential, commercial, hospitality etc).

Ahead of submitting nominations, all the necessary approvals must be sourced from the relevant parties by the organisation submitting the nomination. Refurbishment projects should be submitted to the ‘Refurbishment & Retrofit Project of the Year’ category, while MEP focused projects should be submitted to the ‘MEP Project of the Year’ category.

Nominations can be submitted by developers or fit-out contractors, and should include: why the project deserves to win; the overall scope and key details of the project; sustainable focus and achievements; the use of cutting edge technology, and challenges that were encountered and overcome in the delivery of the project. Only projects that have been completed or are at least 50% complete in the 12 month period leading up to the awards are eligible to win. Although hidden from view, a project’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) is crucial to creating a space that is both usable and safe. MEP is particularly important in the Middle East, which is why this category honors outstanding displays of MEP contracting work from across the region. There are no restrictions as to the type of project that can be submitted (residential, commercial, leisure etc), as long as the focus of the nomination is on the project’s MEP elements.

Ahead of submitting nominations, all the necessary approvals must be sourced from the relevant parties by the organisation submitting the nomination. Nominations focused on overall project refurbishment should be submitted to the ‘Refurbishment & Retrofit Project of the Year’ category.

Nominations can be submitted by developers, MEP contractors, as well as operators, and should include: why the project deserves to win; the overall scope and key details of the project; sustainable focus and achievements; the use of cutting edge technology, and challenges that were encountered and overcome in the delivery of the project. Refurbishment & Retrofit Project of the Year

A refurbishment or retrofit project that is being undertaken by an experienced contractor can give aging assets a new lease on life. As organisations step up their focus on sustainability or look to gain additional value from existing assets, refurbishments have increased in frequency across the Middle East. Here, Big Project ME looks to highlight exemplary refurbishment and retrofit projects. There are no restrictions as to the type of project that can be submitted (residential, commercial, leisure etc).

New fit-out and MEP focused nominations should be submitted to the ‘Fit-Out Project of the Year’ or ‘MEP Project of the Year’ categories respectively.

Nominations can be submitted by developers, contractors, as well as operators, and should include: why the project deserves to win; the overall scope and key details of the project; sustainable focus and achievements; the use of cutting edge technology, and challenges that were encountered and overcome in the delivery of the project. Project of the Year – Energy

Reliable year-round energy is critical to a country’s growth and as the world steps up its focus on combatting greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), there’s an immense amount of focus on renewable energy projects. This category recognises the Middle East’s top energy-focused projects whether they are a new build or expansion/refurbishment of existing facilities. Projects can include everything from solar plants to solar retrofit projects to substations to upgrades of existing conventional energy generation facilities, and power distribution networks.

Ahead of submitting nominations, all the necessary approvals must be sourced from the relevant parties by the organisation submitting the nomination.

Nominations can be submitted by any of the following organisations: asset owner; contractor; operator; energy specialist; supplier, and should only highlight projects that have been delivered or are over 50% complete, within the 12 month timeframe leading up to the awards. Nominations should highlight: project scope and relevant details; why the project deserves to win; the project’s sustainable focus and supporting data to prove the project is delivering on its promise (where possible); the project’s impact on the market it serves, and the project’s in-country value (ICV). Project of the Year – Water

Water is the most precious natural resource on earth and reliable year-round water is critical to a country’s growth. The Middle East is one of the most water scarce areas on earth and given that regional governments have ambitious growth goals and sustainability agendas, there’s been a tangible increase in water projects across the Middle East. This category is designed to recognise the Middle East’s top water-focused projects, whether they are a new build or expansion/refurbishment of existing facilities. Projects can include everything from desalination plants to dams to wastewater recycling facilities and water distribution networks.

Ahead of submitting nominations, all the necessary approvals must be sourced from the relevant parties by the organisation submitting the nomination.

Nominations can be submitted by any of the following entities: asset owner; contractor; operator; water specialist; supplier, and should only highlight projects that have been delivered or are over 50% complete, within the 12 month timeframe leading up to the awards. Nominations should highlight: project scope and relevant details; why the project deserves to win; the project’s sustainable focus and supporting data to prove the project is delivering on its promise (where possible); the project’s impact on the market it serves, and the project’s in-country value (ICV).
